HEALTH DEPARTMENT SEEKS INFORMATION ABOUT A CAT TO RULE OUT RABIES INFECTION
(Trumansburg, NY – February 22, 2018) – The Tompkins County Health Department must locate a cat that bit a person on South Street between School House Lane and Whig Street in the Village of Trumansburg. The bite occurred Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at approximately 11:30 p.m.
The cat is described as an off-white domestic long hair with grey tiger stripes on the head and paws. The person bitten indicated the cat appeared to be well-cared for and groomed indicating that it was owned and not feral.
The Department seeks to verify vaccination status and health of the biting cat over a ten day period. If the cat can be located and observed to be healthy by the Department, the risk of rabies infection can be ruled out and rabies post-exposure treatment for the person who was bitten will not be necessary.
Anyone with information regarding this cat is urged to call the Tompkins County Environmental Health Division at (607) 274-6688.
